BBC Synopsis: Christmas Eve 1892, and the falling snow is the stuff of fairy-tales. When the fairy-tale becomes a nightmare and a chilling menace threatens Earth, an unorthodox young governess, Clara, calls on the Doctor for help. But the Doctor is in mourning, reclusive and determined not to engage in the problems of the universe. As old friends return, will the Doctor really abandon humankind or will he fight to save the world – and Christmas – from the icy clutches of this mysterious menace.
BBC Worldwide Synopsis: This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, The Snowmen, introduces a new companion, a new look for the Doctor, plus a new monster in this movie-scale episode. Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman as new companion Clara, The Snowmen follows their adventures as they embark on a mission to save Christmas from the villainous Doctor Simeon (Richard E Grant, The Iron Lady, Dracula) and his army of icy snowmen.

Further indications seem to be that this may be more of a "Great Intelligence" story (with the snowmen acting more like Yeti's) intertwined with the Doctor, who's retired, and being kind of a Scrooge. See hereand here.
The Doctor has retired from "saving the Universe" (see above clips) and is "misery" mode, according to Steven Moffat.
The episode takes place in the 1890's, during Victorian times.
Apparently the Doctor changes his outfits in this episode a few times. At one point he is wearing a Sherlock Holmes-type outfit, complete with deer-stalker hat!
According to this poster , the Snowmen aren't actually made of regular snow. They're made of alien snow. Living snow with it's own consciousness, and very, very hungry. They're flesh eating snowmen, according to this poster.
Vastra (the Silurian lizard detective lady); her companion and lover Jenny and their Sontaran butler Strax, reprise their role from a previous episode "A Good Man Goes to War" in Series 6. Strax was assumed dead in that episode, so it will be interesting to find out how he survived. Or not. They try hard to get the Doctor out of his "slump;" somewhat unsuccessfully, looks like.
This episode is where the Doctor's new companion, Clara, is introduced. Clara is a governess in Victorian times (and an au-pair in modern times), says this poster. She sleeps in the attic room of the house she works at, says this poster.
The Doctor is quite taken with Clara, according to the Radio Times; at one point in the story, Clara is kissing the Doctor,Radio Times; and later the Doctor gives Clara a key to the TARDIS.
Richard E. Grant plays the bad guy in the story, the sinister Dr. Simeon: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...o-special.html
The Daily Mail mentions a creature called a Memory Worm is in this episode. Keeping in mind that it's the Daily Mail, could this be the creature that Dr. Simeon is speaking to that you see for a second or two in the trailer? Sounds possible.
Clara and Oswin are not the same person, but there probably is some connection between the two characters. There has been a lot of speculating about the connection, which will be revealed in a later episode next year.
Clara seems to have died in this episode; at least that is what this poster says. Is she replacing Rory and the companion who dies?
There is a funeral for Clara at some point; the Doctor goes off in the TARDIS to save her, says this poster.
People watching the filming in Cardiff say this is what happens: don't read this unless you want to be totally spoiled.
The Doctor pilots a plane? This poster thinks so.
The Daily Mail has revealing photos of the Doctor and companions costumes. The Doctor looks dapper in his new outfit for this episode.
Moffat tells The Daily Mail that the Christmas story has some relationship to a never filmed episode of Doctor Who that was originally conceived years ago by the late great Douglas Adams. The BBC bosses decided the story of the Doctor deciding to quit wasn't something they wanted to air. Apparently this story incorporates this idea, along with others. It was originally thought that the episode is also loosely based on a children's story by Raymond Briggs called The Snowman. Moffat steals from the best.
