Yes I know this is old news but thought it should at least be added to the site for those who may not have seen.

On the 6th and 9th of July Doctor Who was filming Episode 11 of Series 7 rumoured to be called “The Crimson Horror” written by Mark Gatiss (pictured to the left).  This episode will see the return of Dan Starkey as Commander Strax, Neve McIntosh as Madame Vastra and Catrin Stewart as Jenny. As you can see the Doctor is once again in a new costume and a new hat.

I’m still a little disappointed that the new companion overall is just a carbon copy of Rose, Martha and Amy. As long as the companion is near equal to Smith’s age, there will always be avenues open for unnecessary drama centered around love triangles, which has no place in a sci fi series such as Doctor Who. How about an alien for the companion? Or instead of having the male companion be a glorified Mickey Smith, why not a Jamie? Ian? Steven? Why is the male companion always third row seat, and why does he always need to be portrayed as a clumsy fool? People who knock the original series explain Russell T Davies’ era by saying, “Doctor Who is all about change.” Ok, why hasn’t the role of the companion ever changed in the last 7 years? I must point out a couple of exceptions:
    Donna Noble and Adelaide Brooke.

    • Bex

Well doesn’t the inclusion of Donna and Adele (not to mention the ommission of Jack Harkness) blow a whole in your arguement? Also Amy was a very different character to Rose and Martha.
Furthermore, the most successful compainions throughout the show’s history have been 20 something females- Jo Grant, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, need I go on?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

Well, it’s easy to support that statistic when you consider the bulk of his companions WERE FEMALE. However, Jamie is perhaps the most notable male companion, and I’m just not sure why after 7 years we’re still getting a female in her early 20s with a pretty face.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

But look at the age variance of those companions. They weren’t all early
20s, nor were they all eye candy. Because they weren’t meant to be.
They were meant to be just what it says on the tin – a companion.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

        What about Ian and Barbara?
        What about Steven?
        What about Ben Jackson?
These are all REGULAR COMPANIONS. When Harkness sticks around for a whole season, I’ll include him on the list.

    • tce8

Clara a “carbon copy”? Come off it, you haven’t even seen a single second of her performance yet. If you want more diversity in companions, then making snap judgements based on appearance like that goes against your whole point.
Also Rory a “glorified Mickey” just because they both had girlfriends (and feelings of inadequacy), that’s rich.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

Rose = attractive female in early 20s
Martha = attractive female in early 20s
Astrid Peth = attractive female in early 20s
Lady Christina = attractive female in early 20s
Amy Pond = attractive female in early 20s
Idris = attractive female in early 20s

All the above have kissed the Doctor.

All the above have had romantic feelings for the Doctor.

        Get some perspective, then comment.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

Besides, EVERY COMPANION since 1996 has been from present-day Earth. When you know how Steven, Dodo, Jamie, Victoria, Romana, Leela, Adric, and so on are, then tell me Clara isn’t a carbon copy. $20 says a replacement for Rory is introduced before the end of S7.

    • Harvey

Clara is supposed to be something ‘different’ though, so I hope they’ve made her a relative of the Dr’s to prevent another silly love story between him and his companion. Even if they brought in a main male companion, some idiots will twist it round to suggest the Dr and he were gay and in love with each other… *rolls eyes*… Then again, the suggestive language the writers use doesn’t help… they need to focus on sci-fi story telling, not romance story telling!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPIIT7QBWAHDXM6ZPSS2634HJI Ethan

I agree with you. The romance thing just doesn’t fit the kind of entertainment Doctor Who is meant to be. It became irritating halfway through S6, where even after Amy & Rory had said their vows, Moffat continued to lace the dialogue to suggest that perhaps Amy still has the hots for The Doctor. Utterly ridculous, and has absolutely NOTHING to do with the premise of the show. It’s already been established by “Flesh And Stone” that The Doctor has nothing but complete rejection for any romantic feelings Amy has, or any other companion for that matter. Even though it’s Matt Smith, it’s still the same Doctor, and he hasn’t forgotten that soapy series with Rose Tyler. I also agree that some Queer As Folk fans that watch it will twist a male companion into a gay relationship, but a lot depends on how the writer portray the characters. You only need to look at Turlough, Adric, or Jamie to know what I mean. Clara may be “different” in the relationship to the Doctor, but on the surface, it still looks like a copy of the previous companions.

An FN Sontaran as a butler?! WTF?! I don’t care what BS excuse is given, No Sontaran would ever allow such a thing to happen. Unless he was waiting for The Doctor to show up. But if it’s just to show how “Bad” Madame Varstra is then what a joke!
And Clara is going to be soooooo vastly different from all the rest because (GASP) she’s going to be a lesbian. so she won’t fall in love with the Dr. Ooooh, that is soooo………STUPID! Sheesh! And supposedly she’ll be involved with some lame-azz love triangle with Madame Varstra and Jenny (Who I hope to high heaven isn’t the Dr’s daughter. To think her character might have went from badass to a joke! ugh!) And some of Moffat’s little defenders kept assuring us, who didn’t like his inane and predictable and cliched writing that at least it was no longer a soap opera! LOL! Really?! With a love triangle?! Yeah, because no soap opera would ever stoop so low as to have a love triangle. RME
Obviously Moffat is going to satisfy the sick perverted dreams of hormonally charged teenagers.
Of course all gay and straight relationships (as they are) must be all about sex. In other words, extremely juvenile. Never any gay or straight relationships that are examples of mature individuals engaging in a mature relationship based on Real love and respect. Noooo, that’s too decent for someone like Moffat. lol
And who cares to place a wager that (YAWN) Clara turns out to be the daughter of River and the Dr. Even though River is a sociopath and children born to sociopaths tend to raise children who are also sociopaths. And yes sociopaths can fall in love. Well they call it falling deeply in love but in reality they become extremely obsessed with one person. And they can also save lives. Ted Bundy once saved the life of a 3 yr old boy. Kept him from drowning. Yes, the same sick twisted sociopathic Ted Bundy who raped and murdered more then 30 women.
The less we see of her the better.
And I hope that Moffat-The-Moron doesn’t kill Amy or Rory. That would be so stupid. Just drop them back on Earth. Why he wants to torture them, I’ll never know. Maybe they remind him of his parents.lol

I’ve been wondering who the “Mickey/Rory” for the new companion would be, and I think you’ve probably called it – the only thing left the series can do other than out right portraying a companion like an original series companion is have that companion be lesbian. Why is so much of a science fiction series rooted in sexuality?! Why can’t we just travel through space and time and go through adventures as a TEAM, and not a family going through difficult times?

  • Jasmine

I think it is a bit boring to mostly have young companions, Donna Noble was a bit irritating to some fans but I liked her feisty attitude and she was good.

    • http://about.me/adamtowers Adam Towers

I just like any companion that can bring a new dynamic. Rory and Amy were able to add a new spin to the show unfelt since the classics, I’d love Clara to be “different” but would prefer something really left field to shake things up.

  • Jasmine

I just had a thought what if Jenna is the daughter of Madame Vastra and Jenny, that would be different

  • Jasmine

It is possible that they, madame vastra and Jenny become friends of Jenna and thats all.I like Madame Vastra and if she has a Sontaran butler, thats ok with me.
If shes a close friend of the doctor as was implied previously, in an episode then why not.

  • Jasmine

I like River and it is not fair to compare her with Ted Bundy, she was only trained to kill the doctor. She had broken her conditioning to some extent because she saved his life. I think River has compassion, that I am sureTB never ever had.
The Master is more like Ted Bundy than River
