Today they were filming the Christmas special at Fields House in Newport (where they filmed Blink).  Spotted on set were Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra) who we revealed was returning yesterday.

However today Tom Ward was spotted (who was revealed by the BBC on the 6th August), but also the return of Catrin Stewart (Jenny) and Dan Starkey (Strax) once again in a butler uniform (as seen in episode 11 filming here). Also spotted was Liz White playing a maid, you may have seen her in Life on Mars or recently in the film The Woman in Black.

Based on all of the filming on all episodes and what we have seen, Victorian times seems to be a major influence in the second half of the season (7b). This is where I am going to throw out some pure speculation based on filming and spoilers: What if something happens to the TARDIS or the angels send the doctor back in time in episode 5 and he is stuck in Victorian times.

What do you think with the return of all these characters confirmed for at least 2 episodes? Discuss below.

It seems to be a possibility having him stranded in the past, but one of Gatiss’ stories (the first one, which is rumoured to be called “The Cold War”) have been confirmed to be set in the very near past (enough for its description as a historical to be debateable to people of a certain age).
If the companion is from this period though it seems likely the Doctor will just be taking her back to her own time as he does with many of his companions post-revival. The only difference is she’s from circa 1888 rather than the early 21st century.

I think it would be a breath of fresh air to finally get a companion that isn’t from present-day Earth. A Vicki or Romana would have been better, though.

Goodness, Ethan, you really are an enfant terrible, aren’t you?

We’ll never get a companion from the future, the companions purpose is to question on behalf of the audience, without one the X-factor standard audience “wouldn’t get it”.

        Such a shame.

Bernice Summerfield was a companion of the 7th and 8th Doctor and was from the future the 26/27 century. Also Capt Jack was also from the future

What a great point – as we all know the casual viewing audience of Doctor Who all buy the audio plays!

The casual audience need someone who can ask questions, that’s why we never have future companions. Bernice doesn’t count since the only people who have a clue who she is are the die hard fans, a minuscule proportion of the audience who don’t carry the shows ratings.

Feel free to use canon like Bernice to aid your point, the 2012 audience isn’t the same as it was in the 60′s, 70′s & 80′s and that’s why we’ll not get another permanent companion like Stephen, Bernice or Captain Jack.

As for Captain Jack, he’s never been in more than three consecutive episodes and whenever he is he’s also joined by a contemporary companion.

Wonder if JLC is a stowaway or is dragged back to the Victorian era with the Doctor as a result of the Angels. She could crop up by surprise in the Christmas Special!

It is a very good theory and it would be very different

  • Jade

The tardis was supposedly turned to stone in an episode it is possible he is only stuck there until he fixes it

  • Chloe

I think it’s opposite. I think Clara gets sent back in time and the Doctor finds her.
