Asylum of the Daleks

I’ll also include some possible theories and speculation on what will happen in future episodes.

You can see all of the newly released promo pics of Jenna/Oswin on our flickr page here

Asylum of the Daleks

Asylum of the DaleksIn Asylum of the Daleks we learn her name is Oswin Oswald. She is a computer genius before the Daleks took hold of her. She crashed on the Asylum in an escape pod from a starship called the Alaska. Everyone died other than her, Harvey was preserved in ice. With her being a genius rather than making her a human/dalek slave we see her being turned into a full fledged Dalek. However this does not go as planned and possibly due to her intellect she fights the process and is then locked away in the intensive care ward due to her believing she is human.  Using her skills she hacks into the Dalek hive mind and removes any records of the Doctor from their databases. We do not have a time or date when she crashed but we can assume it is well in the future with humans travelling via space.  The Doctor never see’s the human form of Oswin.

Christmas Episode (The Snowmen)

RyanFarrr42The official introduction episode for Jenna-Louise Coleman as a companion.  From set reports it is believed her name will be Clara Oswin (see below).  The episode is set in the 1890′s and we can assume that Clara is also from that time judging by the way she speaks and interacts with the characters.  It is believed she works alongside Jenny (Catrin Stewart) at the home of Latimer (Tom Ward).  It is believed that at the end of the Christmas episode that Clara will die based on grave side set reports of the Doctor, Vastra and Jenny standing over a graveside talking about her.

Updated: As we had predicted they are two totally different characters but are linked in some sort of way due to the repetition of key information (“soufflé” and “Run you clever boy and Remember”). Howeber the Christmas episode did not reveal how there is a connection which is more than likely going to be the theme of series 7b/2013 series. The Doctor is now aware of the connection and will be investigating the reasons why (see theories below)

2013 Series / Series 7b Clara

new oswin

Jenna-Louise Coleman will be playing an entirely new version of Clara/Oswin in the 2013 series. From what we can tell from promo’s and set pictures she is going to be very similar to her Oswin Dalek character and be a very smart and someone who is very good with computers and technology.

Will Moffatt however keep killing off her character and making a new version every other episode? Information is pointing towards the idea of no but it would be very interesting to see how they would work with this story if it is a new character every episode.  Will we get the answers to her secret early in the series, possibly not. Maybe her secret will help to move forward into the 50th Anniversary episodes.

What can we speculate?

The below is nothing more than speculation, guesses and theories.

Theory 1 – Family Connection / Blood Line

Asylum of the DaleksWe know that Oswin and Clara are going to be two totally different characters. However with them both being played by the same actress we can again guess that there will be some sort of family connection. Just like with Eve Myles who played Gwyneth in “The unquiet dead” and Gwen in Torchwood/Doctor Who. We could speculate that Oswin may be some sort of descendant of Clara. Could there be some sort of connection via the DNA and when she meets the Doctor it triggers timey wimey memories?.

Theory 2 – Great Intelligence Connection

2013-18
The Great Intelligence travels using astral projection. Astral Projection is when the soul leaves the body and travels to somewhere else. What if somehow this is the cause of multiple Clara’s through time. When she dies her soul travels to another body/host. We know from the Christmas special she had a psychic link to the snow and the great intelligence right at the end, could she have also proejcted herself like the great intelligence?.  We also know from set pictures and reports from the first episode of 7b here that she is unaware to who the Doctor is but the Doctor references Clara from the Christmas special and her Christmas alter ego.

The new companion was a dalek, died in first episode and comes back for christmas as a 19th century character … 0_0 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/AdamKalontas Adam A.J. Kalontas

You can’t say Moffat didn’t deliver on the promise of “meeting the new companion like no one before”.

      • http://www.facebook.com/paul.rathke Paul Rathke

You can say that if she’s a different character.

  • Ely

What a complex character, will have to tune in to see just who the heck she is and how the doctor stumbles across her in the future… past?

  • Keria Anne

So far I like her, a little like River but not enough to feel like their just copying the character. Have to see more of her before I can make a call one way or another.

Here’s my speculation, take it for what you will.

From what it looks like to me is that Clara/Oswin is going to die at the end of the Christmas episode as well and is found yet again by the Doctor in another time period, thus the modern clothes she’s been seen wearing. The best I can think of is that it’s the same person is being cloned or reincarnated in different places throughout time, perhaps set there by someone for the Doctor to find?

    • Rick Mycroft

      “Oh no! Not again!”

  • aangooduk

Loving the blogs comments & speculation. but above all loving the show !
Latimer AGAIN … Latimer was the schoolboy in ‘the Family of Blood’, & the other doctor in ‘The new Doctor’ lived in Latimer street. Coincidence ?

    • rokos

some writers like to recycle names because it gives them a grip on their characters. Russel T. Davies used to do it all the time. For instance, there is Vince Tyler in Queer as Folk and Rose Tyler in Doctor Who. Both are the kind of people next door you can relate to.

      • chris

Stewart Alan Jones – Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith – Micky Smith etc totally agree with you on that comment

  • Flipper von Osgold

I can only assume that the character of Clara/Oswin is going to be someone that the Doctor keeps on meeting in different incarnations of the same character, leading and luring him into some sort of trap.

If not that, then it’s most likely that Clara’s fate is sealed once she meets the Doctor in the Xmas Special, and it is the Doctor’s fault that she ends up as a Dalek somehow.

    • tce8

I’m with you on this one, we might be seeing something wherein the Doctor meets a “new” Oswin every episode.

Well, it’s one way to keep the relationship fresh…

  • The_Eternal_Dalek

Caroline Skinner has confirmed the two are indeed seperate characters but that’s just about all we know now.
There is one other thign I’d like to point out though, the newspaper that reported that she was called “Clara Oswin” gave a quote as one of her first lines and it showed up in Asylum of the Daleks. As the two are seperate characters that would suggest to me that that neews story was just somebody who had been at a screening for Asylum or had gotten a copy somehow and had got the wrong end of the stick.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamKalontas Adam A.J. Kalontas

Now that I’ve seen her in action, I want more of her. Damn you Moffat, why can’t you produce 10 episodes a week?

  • Rhys Williamson

The Doctor never saw Oswin in human form so the characters could be the same. The Doctor picks up Oswin in Victorian times and when he finally leaves her she boards the ship Alaska and heads towards her fate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sam.dempsey.9256 Sam Dempsey

Easy download Oswin onto sonic screwdriver upload into dead Cara – Tada one genius in cool Victoria clothing

  • shayke

The doctor took off the bracelet. maybe she was able to upload herself to the spores and is going to stick with him and take over the dead claras body.

  • Jake

    sees*

  • Sueda

I believe that oswin is not a dalek. Cause if she is a dalek why didnt she forget bout the doctor ? I think the daleks put her in a dalek like teselecta. Also why other daleks tried to go into oswins place every night if she is a dalek ?

    • http://profiles.google.com/thekelvingreen Kelvin Green

It was a metaphor. The Daleks trying to break in were symbolising the Dalek psychology trying to take over Oswin’s personality.

    • http://www.facebook.com/theweaponislove Jenny Williams

She did keep calling them by different names, possibly so as not to forget them, Chin Boy, Nina/The Nose, etc.

      • Sueda

So she will not remember him as the doctor but remembers him as the chinboy ?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FSAKNSWIXAZOFAWKUQRCMD7CBY Jason

maybe they hadnt finished the process and also they were crazy

  • ac

They could just be reusing the same actress for different roles, the same way Karen Gillan appeared during the tenth doctor’s run (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fires_of_Pompeii) in a completely unrelated role.

    • The_Eternal_Dalek

It is exactly that (although maybe with a connection this time given how close it is).

  • cdheer

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the word “sees” does NOT HAVE AN APOSTROPHE!

  • Ciara

I think Oswin is a Time Lord. I also have a theory that Oswin is a regeneration of Jenny.

    • Joseph

I have the same idea. Clara’s probably an alias she’ll use throughout the Xmas special and she reveals herself as Jenny near the end. That’s probably what they mean by “Clara will die at the end”.

      • Farmulousa

Doesn’t Clara (Oswin) have to die in the end? I mean she’s already dead in a non-linear way.

  • Lala Land

Maybe… If Oswin told the Doctor to remember he does… The Doctor had no protection against the nano-cloud so if Oswin can hack into the Dalek path web and the Doctor is affected by the cloud and Oswin can make the DALEKS forget, maybe she makes the Doctor remember by being someone only the Doctor can see and interact with, being unseen to everyone else?

  • http://www.facebook.com/edward.gerlach Eddy Christopher Gerlach

    Remember guys, ‘Emergency Temperal shift’

  • hiimjoe

i think he will meet clara in 1890 and her death will remind him of oswin who said repeatadly “remember me” i then think the doctor will travel in time to the moment before the asylum blows up and saves the dalek form of oswin. this means that there would be no paradox’s and the doctor, amy and rory still get to live. i think the souflees may be some sort of attempt to get her old body back and she just needs to “mix the ingrediants in the right order”. i think the doctor will travel with the dalek oswin for a while until she manages to turn herself back into a human. she is a genius after all

  • carriesDAD

Just to note – the chair she is sitting on when she is talking to the Dr in the asylum episode is the same chair the doctor’s daughter Jenny was in when she also want to “visit the stars”.

    • Chocltmnms

She’s “inside” a Dalek suit so no it’s not the same chair. I think they just had to reuse some props, or they liked the design.

      • Snipes

She might be “inside” a Dalek suit so the chair might not be physically real, but the chair is real in her mind. This is the chair she crashed with. I like the idea of the Doctor’s daughter coming back.

    • chris

I just googled this and the chairs are slightly different. the backs of the chairs are, however i think this idea is cool, as when jenny regenerated she didnt fully regenerate and came back to life in the same body, so could be possible that clara oswin oswald regenerates in the same body from time to time, but if this is the case then something must of happened to her memory as she would of known who the doctor was in the christmas episode,

      • Nemo

Unless her memory gets wiped when she dies. She is an “echo” of a time lord so her regeneration process would probably not be perfected.

  • http://twitter.com/dinosaurcrossin dinosaur crossing

apperently from whispers going round she is jenny the doctors daaughter and shes just regenerated and she lost her memory and the dalek isnt a dalek its a tardis with its chamilion shield working

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacob.welham.58 Jacob Welham

      How’d she get a TARDIS?

      • Nemo

Who knows, in The Doctors Wife there were tons of TARDIS and even though the doctor says its the last he didn’t know about the Master still lurking about while he was saying he was the last so there may have been one.

  • Clare McOswin :D

Near the end of Asylum Of The Daleks, ‘Oswin’ said “Remember me”, would that be refering to when the doctor meets her in 1890???

Has anyone noticed that almost all of the episodes from the Xmas special onwards are set in Victorian times? I think the detectives Vastra and Jenny are going to be the “bait” or “root” characters for the rest of this season. In other words, an excuse to return to Clara’s respective timeline, possibly before she dies in “The Snowman.” Just as Jackie/Mickey were “root” characters for returning to modern day Cardiff/London with 9 and 10.

    • Samuel Ahmed

Actually no, only 2 or 3 episodes are Victorian-set.

      ep 1 – modern day
      ep 2 – alien planet
      ep 3 – ?
      ep 4 – victorian
      ep 5 – tardis
      ep 6 – victorian
      ep 7 – ? (cybermen)
      ep 8 – ? (features vastra, jenny & strax)

  • http://www.facebook.com/christian.garciaventura Christian Garcia Ventura

I think Clara and Oswin are the same character, but Clara is the girl who knows the doctor and Oswin is its future version, and also I think Oswin can’t to remember him because when she transformed in daleks, they erased her memory.

  • Pennie678

Just saw the Christmas special. Just saying, the above theories are completely wrong. Not gonna spoil anything though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1053985539 Andrew Smith

this could be a foundation of new hitec industry that may involve the indirect conflics from the dalecs and might change the direction of the course of the doctor and his companions and might send huge riples through time that trigger his home planet to intercept him to alter course for massive fight with new enemy from another time portal,

  • Doctorette

    Another BAD WOLF :)

  • arlene1999

I believe that Clara/Oswin is the Doctors daughter from David Tennant’s Doctor’s years. She stays dead a lot longer than the normal time lord and dosn’t always change her face like a normal time lord after regenration.

  • RichardL

Anagram of Oswin is “I Snow” – shes probably reincarnated each time by the intelligent snow remembering her template eg Dalek Asylum also on snow planet. Doctor at end of Snowmen still had the intelligent ice from the fallen governess and was scanning it with the sonic screwdriver.

  • JackW

She’s died again.. I have a theory that she is the doctor’s daughter, regenerated, which ties in nicely with the speculation of David Tennant returning and why The Doctor knew that she was right. just a theory..

When has there been speculation of Tennant returning? And why the hell can’t people move on from him. Kinda annoying, he’s gone, except in multi-doctor specials which even the classic series was known to have done, he isn’t coming back as the main doctor.

      • doctorwhofan1

All Jack meant was that Tennant would return just for the 50th lol, I think anyway, if not then I agree with you!

      • http://www.facebook.com/paul.phoenixnovarebirth Paul Phoenixnovarebirth

David and Moff have both hinted at his return. Also Moff begged RTD to come back to try and save the show’s declining ratings but RTD told him to get lost.

        • Lighternote

Moffat did ask RTD to return but only because he admires him as a writer and because they are friends. It has nothing to do with the ratings which are very healthy. Although RTD has declined I suspect it was done politely and respectfully. He would not have told him to “Get Lost”. They have a lot of respect for each other as you would know if you read “The Writers Tale” which details the making of Series 4 and tepee specials from RTD’s point of view. It is an excellent read. I recommend it to all!

  • Hedgehog

First we are reminded that Strax is a mass produced Sontaran. The we are shown the card reading Greater Intelligence Institute. And Oswin has died twice. And let’s not forget that a fake doctor was shot by River Song. Clara/Oswin has to be a construct, doesn’t she?

  • magary80

I also thought about Clara being Jenny. But the attraction between them would leave an ewww factor. Plus the doctor is supposed to be married now. And how convenient to choose “pond” as one of your one word answers? Could it be a regenerated River Song after she escapes the library from Tennant’s doctor?

    • http://www.facebook.com/kieron.davies Kieron Davies

Yes but remember Amy kissed The Doctor in Episode 1 of Smith’s reign, and she’s River’s Mum, and River is the Doctor’s wife, so Amy is The Doctor’s mother-in-law.

      • CG212

Yes but mother in law is nowhere near as creepy as a daughter making out with her dad.

        • http://twitter.com/Ayelis Steve

Female clone making out with her male self. Call it ‘daughter’ all you want, but if there’s not a second person involved, it’s just a clone. I’d say the creepy factor is that he’s 900+ years older than she is. Actually, that’s the creepy part of anyone kissing him.

    • mec

River Song gave all her regenerations to save The Doctor when he was poisoned so its highly unlikely.

      • alice

Time Lords have 13 regenerations so River gave up the rest of hers but we do not know how many she had used to begin with… I am waiting for someone to start keeping the journals the spend little time together in the same timeline… that is why they are moving backwards in their meetings. When River returns and Clare is there that will rule her out, unless Moffet pulls another trick out of his imagination. Would love to see Simms back as the Master in any capacity.

        • alice

that might be 12 it has been a long time since I saw the episode that Tom Baker explained it all to one of his companions. Another tidbit Tom Baker also married a companion in real life it was Romano (sp) that was a long time ago though.

  • Eva

Actually,Clara could be a child of Amy and tory when they got sent back in time by the angels. Sorry I meant amys husband. This auto correct is annoying. But still, that could be a possibility. The doctor took to her awful fast, no?

  • Eva

Also when Clara said run you clever boy, River said something extremely similar before. Do whatever you want with that theory.

    • ThirstyHowl

Hmmm. River takes over the hive mind of the Vashta Nerada. Oswin takes over the hive mind of the Daleks. If Clara takes over the mind of the Great Intelligence, that rewrites the time stream of the London Underground episodes. But let’s go on in this direction…

Episode 7 may schedule a rewrite of the hive mind of the Cybermen to make them benevolent. Now the Doctor has the armies he needs to unlock the Time War and rewrite it. This can reopen the mysteries of the Doctor’s Time Lord wife and children.

But maybe Idris (the TARDIS) is a saved incarnation of the Doctor’s wife. And River asks her parents “The Doctor said I was the child of the TARDIS. What does that mean?” And Jenny is a loose end, how can we tangle her time stream back into this?

We’re well on our way from science fiction to soap opera, but that’s the fate of all superheroes.

  • quantumac

“CLARA OSWIN OSWALD” is an anagram for “I WAS A SNOW DARLLOC”, if you allow for misspelling of Dalek.

    • masterjace

DARLLOC also is lac, cal, alc, acl, Lord? Could spell out I was a snow Lord ALC, as well not sure about the misspelling of Dalek when you can get other words out of it.

  • mal

I sure hope she’s not the doctors daughter since she full on mouth kissed him.

  • MeZaDoctor

I think the Doctor’s ultimate aim this series is to stop her from dying. Much like the way he wanted to stop himself dying in Series 6, he somehow knows that her fate is sealed, however the one thing the Doctor can’t bear is loss. He’s not going to let her die a third time, or a fourth time, or a fifth time etc. We know that there’s something strange about her, and the GI theory sounds plausible. I think this could turn into something like what happens with Luke in The Sarah Jane Adventures – Clara is something special, and she’s wanted, but the Doctor isn’t going to let that happen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ethan-White/100000409225793 Ethan White

Here’s my suggestion: Let’s have a season for once that isn’t entirely about the companion, or any other character for that matter. The series is starting to get bloody daft with the excessive forced drama and lack of science. I hope everyone here knows that, it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to free fall from CLOUD LEVEL, slam into the ground and not draw so much as a drop of blood. Had this happened in the original series, the result would have been too gory to show.

  • Dontmindme

I thought I noticed a reference to GOO in the episode. It could be that each Oswin is somehow a GOO copy of an original.

  • davron2

She could be the last remaining god of Ragnarok which is why she is able to reappear as different versions of Clara Oswin Oswald as a disguise because like the Greater intelligence she seems to be able to reincarnate herself at will. She can’t be a TimeLord because time lords regenerate into different incarnations. unless he were to have a continual source of her unique oswin DNA not unlike the tenth doctor with regenerating back into his tenth reincarnation a second time through his hand. However it doesn’t account for the continual conscious memory loss however subconsciously she seems to recognise the Doctor. so I conclude that she either is a god like entity that is as old as the great intelligence or older.

  • Joes123

There will be several of her composing the key to time. Giving her the key was symbolic. The Dr needs to reset the universe because Rassilon has trapped the black and white guardians; the White guardian was the woman with Rassilon. (rant: The woman is not his mom because his mom is human – the interview with the actess saying otherwise is a red herring; it is canon because the BBC claims the movie as such). I suspect the last key will force her to die or risk the universe causing a moral dilema.

  • D.D Jenny fan

hi i think oswin oswald Cara is jenny from david tennate searies. Think about dieing and coming back to life it has to regenartion and jenny servied in her searies all though the doctor thinks she s dead.Plus look at the adverts to the 2013 one at the end of the advert it sayss time to find out who you are, and there you see oswin holding a gun like jenny dose. Want more well, when oswin says run you clever little boy and rember, well in the jenny searies the doctor says ( and do a whole load of RUNNING) which is simmler. They (doctor who makers ) that they will bring jenny back why not now? Oh and the director(moffet) is realated to the woman who played jenny in david tennet seares. So evrthing semms to add up tha oswin is jenny after she regenarated.

    • alice

No, Jenny is related to Peter Moffet another Doctor (5 I think), it is her father, she is in real life married David Tennent… so the 5th doctor and the 10th doctor are father and son in law. Steven Moffet is also not related to the other Peter Moffet.

  • od ghoti

For what it’s worth I don’t think we’ll get to know the full story till Clara/Oswin ends her run as companion. The theory I’m preferring at the moment is that in her last adventure with the doctor he has to split her into two time streams to protect her from some as yet unknown threat. This saves her, but in so doing she looses her memory of who the doctor is (or has to have that memory erased), as with Donna. The first time Clara/Oswin meets the doctor would then be episode 1 series 7b, in a kind of reverse of River Song’s plot line.

I’ve read through all the theories and none of them mentions the fact, that the the Doctor knew who Clara was at the first time they met in the Snowmen. He even talks to someone on the “phone” about her, and if she recognized the Doctor. In the end the Doctor is truly surprised when he learns that she’s the souflé girl. So, either it has to do something with the memory worm (I think its was important to emphasize touching it without a glove will erase your memory, or its bite erases ten years or so) This is why Clara said “remember me”, because she knew that the Doctor knows him, didn’t know how though. OR the Silence is around, they came to lead the Doctor to the fields of Trenzalore “where the eleventh will fall”. Of course noone can remember them, so they are not even shown yet. / Sorry for the bad english.

  • Andreita_Belem

A theory could be that she is a success like the “bad wolf” when the tardis soul send a message through time and space. and she is send to help the doctor or warn him or keep him company.

  • Scylld

I have a theory but it is not about who Clara/Oswin is but why the doctor is there. At the end the doctor has an image of Clara on a screen. What if he had that image prior to arriving, what if he knew or knows who his new companions may be ahead of time. He mentioned who but not why, in reference to new who his new companions are. He was certain she would not die, when everything was showing otherwise. I believe the Doctor knew who his new companion was going to be because the TARDIS told him. Watch the episode again with an open mind on the idea that he knew ahead of time she would be coming with him.

Maybe the Oswin Oswald in the Asaylum of the Daleks was the one from the future and she becomes a computer genius while with the doctor. It would explain why she was so eager to help him in that episode – some part of her remembered him. But of course since her brain was played with she wouldn’t remember everything.

  • No

How do we know that Oswin and Clara are two totally different characters when it’s obviously the same woman, just different versions of her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/paul.phoenixnovarebirth Paul Phoenixnovarebirth

Bet she is The White Guardian

  • John

Maybe Clara in the present day was touched by a Weeping Angel and sent back to the Victorian era.

Could the GI or Great Inelegance be House from when the Dr. went to the other version of the Universe looking for other Time Lords and Irdis got to speak. When she went after him he was let loos in our time, and universe to look for more Tardis to eat. Not able to find any Oswin is some kind of a trap that he keeps fixing like the patch work Aunty and Uncle. To eventually trap the Dr. and get to the Tardis, or the time war and all the other time lords taped in it. All that free food and energy? He would have to trick the Dr. into opening the war and unlocking it, what better way then with a companion. I also am seeing River ending up in the tardis computer as part of it at some point. Leaving the libary core. Might even take over for Irdis as a guidance system or auto piolet when she is ready to leave the show. So that they can be together forever, just put the libary plant in danger from something. The Master used to have a Tardis of his own at one time, not sure what happend to it, it could be on earth just sitting rusting away. To answer some of the questions about where Jenny and others might get one.

Ok is there a chance that she could be just an anomaly in the time system, that everytime she dies, keeps being reborn in a different century, and in her final moments, she remembers all her lives which would explain her saying the same thing to the doctor twice, so it could be set up by a villan gone wrong or extremely right send the doctor on a quest to find out the truth but leading him to his downfall.

Or theory 2 doctor and rivers child, but the kiss would just be wrong then.

  • CosmicSyzygy

She is CAL from the Library. So many parallels… They even look the same, just an age difference. Also, let’s not forget that the one episode was called Silence in the Library. What if there were actual Silents in the Library, only we don’t find out until a later episode in which they return? I wouldn’t be surprised with Moffat.

  • Anonymous 101

I think she is Rose Tyler’s and the duplicate doctor’s daughter (the bar she worked in in the snowmen episode was called the Rose and King) and she keeps coming alive because she was born in the parallel universe.

  • john smith

perhaps oswin is daughter/grand daughter/great grand daughter of captain jack harkness we know he humped his way through history, was around before the 1800′s and was deemed to be a “fact” of time , that same fact could extend to his children but rather than being unable to die she is reborn every now and then to live a new life kind of how genetic traits miss a generation.

  • Richard

What if clara is the only one that knows the doctor’s real name(or destined to use it), , and time cannot let her die(another jack). What if she clears her memory on purpose every time she recollects the doctors name? Not as crazy as some theories :P

I come to this conclusion not by random Idea, but how they accent her saying ‘doctor who’, the first question. If she is the one to answer this, she obviously cannot die, but if it would bring about the end of the doctor, or the end of something she holds precious(or perhaps river holds precious), she would not allow herself to fulfill that destiny, forever wiping her memory over and over, and persisting through time.

  • Rachel

Personally I think they flirt way to much for it to be the Jenny. I think the idea that Clara is River is the best so far. She is wicked smart, tech savvy and has on multiple occasions River called the Doctor a “Clever Boy”. The Doctor gave her some of his own regenerative energy in the Angels Episode…maybe it reacted with some latent regenerative energy of her own? But we know River dies in the Library, and as of yet minus villains and River the David Tennant and Matt Smith doctors plot points don’t cross. But why does Clara appears in multiple timelines. Clara is also exactly what the Doctor looks for, cheeky, smart, funny can help herself but always open and willing. She sounds like the perfect bait. A trap. Also, classically there is reference twice to Romeo and Juliet. The Doctor outside Clara’s window at night, watching and talking to each other. I could stretch that further but won’t. Wow, this comment is a mess. How’s that for stream of consciousness.

  • Pink Rose

“Clara Oswin Oswald” is also an anagram for “I was CAL, snow, a lord”

  • http://westaby.net Dustin

Clara is one of the multiple reincarnations of Astrid, following the events of the Titanic that spread her “atoms” throughout the universe.

  • Jolie

“Oswin” means friend of God. We can substitute God for the doctor, maybe it has something to do with river song or Jenny, but think about how flirty Clara and the doctor are being. Middy wouldn’t do that if Jenny was Clara. This obviously all ties in with the 50th anniversary episode, think about ways all of that could go? Also, isn’t Billie piper coming back for that episode as well as David Tennant?

darn, i believe she is linked to the great intelligence. she moves without a body until she finds another. interesting plot.

  • Doctor who fan

    1) We know she has some relation to Rose Tyler. Not blood related but
related. Ever since we’ve met Clara in the Asylum of the Daleks up till
now, a rose is always one of the key connections. Rose in her hair
(Asylum of the Daleks), She worked at a pub called the Rose and Crown
(Christmas special), Roses in her room (present day Clara).

    2) If Clara Oswin Oswald was an anagram, she can read as: Window Across All. If we were to find out the meaning behind her name, she would be “A
bright and powerful friend of God” (loose translation – Clara = bright
and famous, Oswin = God’s friend, Oswald = God’s Power). Both context
remind me of one thing – the Tardis. Or specifically, the heart of the
Tardis…which one again relates to Rose who once absorbed the heart of
the Tardis. Interesting note – Donna Temple Noble translates to Lady
Time Lord or something like that.

I think Clara Oswin Oswald is the heart of the Tardis. She could even be the leftover presence of Bad Wolf.

Someone else came up with a similar theory but with a twist. The Oswin Oswald from Asylum of the Daleks will become the Emperor of the Daleks (once she goes insane). And Rose Tyler scattered the emperor’s atoms into time and space (as per the end of series 1) allowing Clara Oswin Oswald to be in different points in time.

This is similar to the heart of the tardis theory and Bad Wolf.

She’s the Doctor’s mother. In the 10th movie we learn that he’s half human on him mother’s side. “Run you clever boy, and remember” will be the last words she ever said to him on Gallifrey, imploring him to escape from some threat which seemingly takes her life. His suppressed memories will come to the fore piece by piece, allowing her psyche to be reborn once more. The R in TARDIS really does stand for Relative; first his in-laws, then his Mum.

Of course, this is just wild speculation on my part, but it does have a nice resonance

  • Jonnyzorro Zorro

Clara is an artificial construct created by someone (possibly Dr or Tardis) to keep the Doctor company (possibly). The rationale behind this is still unclear, but this is evidence that this is the case 1) She seems to be similar in some respects to Rose (as a former love an obvious ‘muse’) 2) She is more vulnerable than most – needing the Doctor 3) when asked what she liked to do in Cold War she had no real idea, as if her past had no real detail, only the constructed finesse see when he creates them in BOST 4) the Barrie doll – a possible reference to Weird Science whetwo boys create their perfect woman using a pc and a Barbie doll 5) TARDIS antipathy – jealousy of a different AI? 6) Emma Grayling telling the Doctor that Clara is normal – perhaps that’s the way she was designed? I’m sure there’s more, and will be more to come, but my battery is dying! As for spread through time and space – only the TARDIS could do that – out of spite maybe orto save her? Hmmmmm. Probably wrong, but the Barbie reference does it for me!

  • Michael Alibrando

Isn’t this supposed to be a “soft mystery?” This could be as simple as The Doctor is meeting “the Claras” in “events” out of order, not unlike he did with River Song. Remember that we, and he, first meets River Song on the day she died, but for her it was The doctor’s first.

So, the Doctor encounters a girl who was changed into a Dalek with a gift of hacking Dalek computers as no one should be able to. She also gives her life that he may be saved. He then encounters someone that seems to be connected to that first encounter. She even mumbles something that seems to connect up with encounter one. Then he gets connected to her again via the TARDIS Police box phone. Then he tracks it to her 21st century location. She is being absorbed into the G. I. and then gets pulled out by The Doctor. She is left with knowledge she did not have before being nearly absorbed.

Somehow, before this is all over, we will learn that thanks to the experience with the G. I. Clara still has all of those computer hacking powers and also that she is now connected to her genetically similar family members past and future (Great-Grand-mother or Great-Grand-Daughter).

IOW – The doctor’s curiosity about the “girl inside the Dalek” created a chain of events that lead him to “accidentally?” create a girl who could do exactly what Oswin Oswald could do in that critical moment on the Dalek Prison Planet.

Or, perhaps, I just typed out a load of completely illogical crap. :-)

  • ka;f;akldf

Clara is one of the Daleks that Rose split in Bad Wolf, except it split Clara from the Dalek. Guessing that Clara may be a fixed point like Jack, she could be coming back. The reason that Clara doesn’t have memory of the Doctor is because of the Dalek wipe of the system about the Doctor. How’s that?

  • Nemo

I personally think that this has to be Jenny. Very clever of them to put it off for a few seasons probably trying to add a little surprise in it for the Doctor Who fans but I doubt they realised to the extent that the Jenny- Claira connnection would be. She did regenerate and she did run off to see the stars. Now what if she is stuck in a sort of time lock or someting where her regeneration went wrong. She is of course a partial time lord. Her regeneration process would not have been perfected causing her to probably have to skip through time in this new body. Or even something devasting happened in her ignorance where she is stuck in this state making her somewhat similiar to the Great Intellegence where she has to regenerate through taking the body of a child through the womb. I say they left Jenny too open ended to allow for the character to fall of the face of the earth and they need to bring her back for closure so why not in a clever way seasons later?

  • BADWOLF

What if Clara was but a manifestation of the Doctors mind, think about it. At the end of season 5 River says ‘you think the universe would be better off without you, but the universe doesn’t agree’ The Doctor is then seen at the asylum of the daleks, he nearly gives up on trying to save Amy and Rory, but then hears Oswin and has the confidence to get up and find a plan. Later on in the series the Doctor has lost Amy and Rory, and with them hope, he sulks up on his cloud until a polite Victorian lady comes and tells him to get down from his sulking cloud. At the start of the new season the Doctor has almost given up in looking for Clara until…there she is, to help the Doctor out of his pit. The Doctors need for Clara/Oswin was so strong that the universe allowed it to manifest itself into time and space. Maybe, just maybe, the universe looks after The Doctor more than he knows…

  • Dneisennn

I guess everyone is forgetting that in the episode “the snowmen” Clara kisses the doctor. There’s an obvious chemistry between her and the doctor. She can’t be Jenny–the doctors daughter. I think she’s river song :)

  • Kent

My guess (it doesn’t have enough behind it to claim a theory) is that Clara goes back in time and she died each time to save The Doctor’s life. He did comment in the prequel that each time she died, she saved his life.
