Cast and Crew
The Doctor’s heart-breaking farewell to Amy and Rory – a race against time through the streets of Manhattan, as New York’s statues come to life around them…
With Rory’s life in danger, the Doctor and Amy must locate him before it’s too late! Luckily, an old friend helps them and guides the way.
What can we speculate based on Spoilers
Seeing their death and Bye Bye Rory
In the trailers we hear the Doctor say “You have witnessed your own future” and we see both Rory and Amy at the graveyard we can make an assumption that they have seen there own gravestones based on the scene where the Doctor is hugging them looking upset (photo below). We also know from the trailers that the angels are after Amy and Rory and are “the police” of New York and will always send them back there, doomed to their fate?
As we know from spoilers, set reports and even the BBC promotional materials Rory is taken by the angels. It was reported on set that Rory is in a basement and we can assume that is the images above. Amy and the Doctor hear him shout and when they enter Rory has disappeared. Judging by the picture below and the more modern feel to the building we can guess these are from when Rory is taken.
Getting Rory Back
I am going to assume that the above photo is after Rory is taken and they are discussing where he could have went. The book that Amy has seems to be very important and maybe she finds a clue to Rory’s location. As they travel via the TARDIS (which you can see clearly in the Canadian promo) they are hit by some sort of temporal distortion and receive a lot of damage where they return to the graveyard.
Once at the graveyard, where it was reported on set the Doctor is putting flames out with a fire extinguisher (which we can see in the promotional image via Spoiler TV). The gravestone has now changed and Rory is now seen to die alone. Amy can not bare to see Rory die alone and see’s an Angel in the graveyard. Thinking all hope is lost goes to the angel and tries to be sent back in time (personally I think she get’s stopped by River, and this is how she is introduced). I believe Amy travels with the Doctor to the past and the building Rory was sent to because in the promotional images below you can still see the slightly burnt TARDIS next to the stairs.
Angels evil agenda and Leap of faith
The angels have a big plan and using the Doctor and his companions is part of it. The angels feed on time energy and they could possibly be using this energy to make angels out of normal statues. It has been rumoured that the angels are trying to turn off all of the lights in Manhattan, and maybe this is why Amy and Rory are on the roof where the sign is lit up so they can watch the statue of liberty in all of the darkness.
As we can now see from all of the trailers the angels are after Rory and Amy. No matter what they do they will always end up in New York. With the Ponds now knowing how they die they decide to rewrite time by jumping off the building in order to save the city from the Angels and the statue of liberty.
Changing time and regenerating
The book that we commonly see I believe is telling the story of what they are currently facing. We hear the Doctor telling River off for rewriting time and we hear in the new promo Amy saying she is rewriting time. Could the Doctor be angry because rewriting time is giving the angels the energy they need or he knows it is what needs to be done and doesn’t want Amy and Rory to sacrifice themselves? We can also see that some sort of regeneration energy is going to be used on River. Based on the Canadian promo we can guess this is because she is grabbed (possibly on purpose judging by the smile) by an angel. Was this her attempt to rewrite history to save Rory and Amy?
How will it end?
We know that it is going to be a sad ending. Will Moffatt kill off the Ponds in a horrible way? We also know there is a funeral where River is present in the same clothes she is wearing in the promotional image. Could the TARDIS scene above be just after the Ponds funeral? But they may die via natural means aka growing old without the Doctor and it’s there funeral for that rather than jumping off a building. River may get to visit them but maybe not him. The BBC do have a tendency to hide the ending in plain sight in their promo pics, and maybe they have done the same here with just River and the Doctor in the TARDIS after all of the angel events.
So how will it end? Well my theory is this:
The Pond’s will survive the events of Manhattan but will decide to stay, that or they jump of the building and die and the Doctor returns to earlier in their timeline in New York to say goodbye. I believe Moffatt said that the ending scene was filmed in front of 100′s of fans in New York and I believe that the scene below with the Doctor with a note in his hand is it. The Doctor will hug Amy and Rory and will walk away with a letter from Amy. He will read the note and we will more than likely hear the note with Amy reading it via a voice over either finishing with the Doctor upset on the bench or seeing the Doctor and River travelling away in the TARDIS.
Below you can see some video taken of the scene (start at 30 second mark)
Remember the above is just theories and specualtion gathered from the internet but backed up with spoilers we already know and have seen in promos and promotional images. Do you have any theories, please share below. Also please do not just say these theories are rubbish without stating why, remember these are just theories based on spoilers.
