“The Snowmen” returning enemy? Multiple Clara’s explained?

I can not 100% confirm this and have read rumours, speculation and spoilers from a number of sites. I have held back on posting this information here until I was pretty much certain that it is accurate. Now these spoilers can be false but we will know tomorrow.

It is rumoured (and near enough confirmed) that a returning enemy of the Doctor will be “The Great Intelligence”. In a number of trailers, promotional videos and even a promo picture removed by the BBC (See Below) we keep seeing the initial GI.

Who is the great Intelligence?

The great intelligence is an enemy of the doctor from the second Doctor era. He is first seen in “the abominable snowmen”. He controls the Yeti’s that we had rumoured would be returning in 2011 (maybe the snowmen were what the rumours were meaning). The great intellegence has no physical body and possess bodies or entities in order to interact with the world around it.

Could sir ian McKellen who is voicing the snowmen actually be the voice of the great intelligence? We have seen in promotional photos Richard E grant’s Dr Simeon unconcious (maybe even dead) on the ground next to the giant snow globe the Doctor is talking to. Maybe the great intelligence takes over Richard E Grant’s body, especially with Richard E grant returning in the 7b finale.

Possible links to Clara/Oswin?

Now this is purely speculation and theory based on my part. As we know from previous spoilers and set reports it is looking likely Jenna-Louise Coleman is playing 3 different characters. Oswin, Clara and we are assuming again a present day version of Clara. Each of which have no recollection of the previous. The Great intellegence may have a part to play in all of these versions of Clara.

The Great Intelligence travels usinh astral projection. Astral Projection is when the soul leaves the body and travels to somewhere else. What if somehow this is the cause of multiple Clara’s through time. When she dies her soul travels to another body/host. We know from set pics reported by RyanFarrr here the Doctor says he is off to find Clara. Could this be a reference to her spirit. We also know from set pictures and reports from the first episode of 7b here that she is unaware to who the Doctor is but the Doctor references Clara from the Christmas special.

I’d like to think that there is a connection between the titles ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ and ‘The Snowmen’ and I would like to see Clara turn into a Yeti, even if that doesn’t fit your description.

I think the idea behind of Clara’s multiple forms is an interesting and clever but I just can’t tell if it’s Moffat-esque…

Why can’t we just have a companion without some stellar story surrounding the character? Look at Ian and Barbara. Steven. Jamie. Zoe. Sarah Jane. Leela. Why can’t new companions be just that – companions. With all of this interweaving of companion back story, half the air time will have to be devoted to resolving it, cutting into the initial plots. Would be nice if for once the series could just be Doctor Who again, and not a personal dramatization of the companions’ history.

  Because that would be boring. Besides, if you were REALLY a fan of Dr. Who you would know that the 4-6 part series were the norm in the 70s, and we dealt with story arcs like the 4th doctor and the key of time that I think tied 30 or so episodes together until it was resolved.
  
  If you want “instant gratification” and require a nice pretty bow around every story, then turn off the TV for a year and buy/rent a DVD and watch it on a week-end. (sorry about the rant)

    If YOU were REALLY a fan, you’d appreciate that a classic-era episode was 25 minutes long (and used quite a lot of recap), so hardly comparable to the modern format. You’d also know that the 6-parters were mostly problematic and tended to drag (which is why they were used sparingly, and eventually dumped). The Key to Time season wasn’t really a story arc, more a loose “collect the set” linkage. I’ll grant you we later had the E-Space stories, tied to the trilogy that reintroduced the Master and bridged Tom-Peter. But arcs were the rare exception, rather than the rule.
    
    Anyway… the modern arcs are much less that they’re cracked up to be. Three months occasionally hinting that “something ominous is going on” and seeding “clues” that could go anywhere, followed by 10 minutes of gabbled technopish so “it only ever happened in an alternative reality anyway”.
    
    But more to Ethan’s point (with which I agree), none of the companions back then were the most important special person ever to exist in all possible realities (yet again), and the show lost nothing because we didn’t know or care about their day jobs, parents, partners, kitchen decor, etc… We liked and cared about Jo, Sarah, Leela, Romana, etc, without them having to be the future great grandmother, in another dimension, of the Higgs Boson.
    
    I think the success of the first part of this season demonstrates that the show works perfectly well without the “are they, weren’t they, isn’t he what, when and how” gubbins. The Clara thing is entertaining, but we’d all carry on watching anyway, wouldn’t we? I mean, as any fule no, she’ll obviously wind up sacrificing one version of her used-to-be self to save the universe, and in the process be tragically transformed into Vastra’s faulty alarm clock… But it’s okay, because she’ll have plenty of yet-to-be selves to spare, so the character can return.
    
    I still enjoy the show, and accept that it has had to evolve to suit a very different sensibility, but I’m not keen on some of the directions being taken. For instance, everybody hold hands and emote like cwazy, so wuv can save the day. The tiresome, unnecessary dragging from the titles into the story of “Doctor Who?” To say nothing of a Sontaran played for panto comedy…

      Brilliant and 100% correct. The writing of Doctor Who is not evolved, it’s regressed. It has become childish and simplistic. Seriously, it’s like high school kids are writing the scrips. Compared to Doctor Who, Twilight looks like Shakespeare!
      
      Go back to actual stories, real plots. None of this, the universe will end crap because this character is the most important character in the universe, until next week when we introduce another character who is the most important character in the universe….rinse, lather, repeat….

        The importance of Dr. Who companions is to show that everyone is the most important person in the world (Donna Noble) and that you don’t have to be a president, prime minister or Timelord to have a story or make a difference.

        A fair point, but only up to a point. Companions have always been “the audience in the action”. They need things explained and act in a way we might. But that’s a world way from, let me see now:
        
        Absorbing the whole of everything and dissolving a gitillion daleks. With a drip for a boyfriend;
        
        Wandering the earth getting everyone to channel waves of lurv which will dissolve a pratillion whatever-they-weres;
        
        Getting somehow accidentally gene-spliced with the Doctor and … erm, dissolving a nurkillion daleks;
        
        Being revealed as the mother of the number you first thought of, and then somehow having the power to wish the Doctor back into existence from a non-existent alt-reality because – oh well, because, erm, give me a minute here, oh yeah, a lack of polyfilla in the village shop. With a drip for a boyfriend.
        
        What’s wrong with being curious, brave, by turns insightful and fallible? Why does every companion since 2005 have to be so … ****ing SPECIAL?
        
        The writing puts me in mind of a group of 8-year-olds charged writing a creative story based on what they did during the holidays. We went to Tenerife and there were dinosaurs and daleks, and ice cream and cake! We will go to Elevenerife and there were daleks, cybermen, cake-sontarans with marzipan heads, and it all only happened if you smell! We went back to Ninerife, and made sure that your two holidays didn’t happen, because we found a friendly dalek (who turns out to be your cousin in a universe that never existed) who went back in time and told your dad (who turns out to be a dinosaur in disguise) not to buy the tickets. You’re all dinosaurs on the inside – we went sideways in time to Thirteenerife, etc…

  I personally like this exploration of the companion’s role and possibilities, just as I liked Moffat exploring the Doctor’s character and failures. Of course it means changing the formula, but for me it’s more interesting– The companion doesn’t always have to be that super normal person– Of course that’s very nice, but I’ve been thinking that the role of the companion has never fully been explored, and Clara might just change that.

You’re late to the party, CJ. The Great Intelligence reveal was posted by Bleeding Cool on the 8th December, it’s now the 24th. You say you held off posting until you were “pretty much certain”, but then contradict yourself by saying the spoilers may be false anyway.

It does look rather like you *really* held off was just to leave it ’til the last minute; were you afraid of upsetting people?

And shouldn’t a “Doctor Who Spoilers” site, you know, post SPOILERS as soon as they hear reports of them?

my theory is that she is part of a cloning experiment of sorts and they all some how share some kind of mental link, perhaps the multiple versions of her are as some kind of means of trapping the doctor into something more deadly from a more sinister enemy like the daleks

After seeing the Christmas special, did anyone else see the possible connections for the Clara line? The memory worm? Clara remembering the last words uttered as a Dalek? Seems to me they are all going to end up being the same person. And basically showing us hints at how we may see the end for the doctors newest companion. At some point the doctor may lose Clara to the daleks on the prison world. Am I nuts at seeing a possible storyline here? Even in the Christmas special the Doctors reaction to having first spoke with Clara seems to show there was something integral there. Thoughts?

Having just watched the Snowmen, it’s my thought that Clara is the Great Intelligence’s near perfected plan to take physical form. Essentially she is the Great Intelligence. And since Moffat tends to show us the obvious answer and then try to distract us with red herrings, I’m sticking with this theory until the end.

  Scaroth was aware he was splintered and could communicate with all of his ‘splinters’. He also didn’t like being splintered and he guided humanity with the single task of building the technology required to prevent himself from being splintered.. I don’t see how she could be splintered.

Theories.

The Doctor seemed to have only a vague remeberence of the Great Intelligence, likely as he is many hundreds of years older and it was met in his second incarnation. The GI would not have known of The Doctor at this point. As with the map of the London Underground being essentially given to the GI it strongly suggests that the GI is following a linear existence, i.e. it is defeated in 1892 and retreats/regains its strength before its reappearance in the Trougton era episode “The Abominable Snowmen”.

Clara has now twice said the lines “Remember me”, when The Doctor and where were faced with the snowmen at the start of “The Snowmen” The Doctor made a comment that the “snow” was feeding off her memories, perhaps not hers but his, and Clara is as has been suggested already a ripple in time created by/actually The Great Intelligence. The Dpoctor despite being in solitude for some time obviously still wants a companion deep down and so perhaps Clara is the companion brought to “life” by thought.

My money is on Clara being a sleeper Dalek. The Dalek’s are luring the Doctor towards something (maybe the Fields of Trenzalore) trying to find out who he is and how he got on their ship.
Paradoxism

Thinking about things from Who lore concerned with ‘immortality’ – the most obvious would be a time lord regenerating but this has a change of appearance and would have been detected when Clara was being treated in ‘The Snowmen’, after that comes the Ring of Rassilon – Clara wears a ring (can be seen when the doctor gives her the TARDIS key when she is on the table and also in Asylum of the Daleks), and as Rassilon has been known to exist as a consciousness (in the Matrix) and also to possess human forms (in the case of Leela) his return seems a definite possibilty – maybe the Great Intelligence and Rassilon are in fact one and the same, and trying to lure the Doctor to the Fields of Trenzalore where discovering his true name will unlock the Time-Lock and free Rassilon and the others trapped during the Time War. Throw in the possibility of Clara not knowing who she actually is through some sort of memory issue (also seems to be a recurring theme already for the new companion) – at least that’s my best guess so far!

what are the odds that clara IS river song. oswin is very, very clever, to a point that she, as a dalek, was superior in intelligence to both the daleks and the doctor. now given that river, a child of the tardis, is technically a timelord with the knowledge of a timelord…….and then saved by the doctor into a library depository of the universe. wouldn’t that make her the most intelligent and knowledgeable being to date? with the knowledge of the universe at her fingertips and the capacity of a timelord to soak it all in, wouldn’t she figure out a way to manifest herself out of the library in some form?…like multiple claras?

the way clara and the doctor interact with each other seem to suggest familiarity. and the way the doctor felt compelled to quickly give clara a key to the tardis is a bit odd and too sudden. the episode of the snowmen could be a greater subtle hint of the story of the doctor and river…..the doctor is the great intelligence’s future and vice versa.

perhaps the future doctor who gave river the sonic screwdriver purposely gave it to river not just to give river (an adventurer) a quiet life in a lifeless library, but to set in motion a way for her to allow this current version of the doctor a way live life with river again, albeit in a different form (but then again, timelords are used to that sort of thing)…..so i’m guessing that the future doctor who gave river the sonic screwdriver is a much, much older doctor who has lived through beyond the stories we know so far.

When first we see Clara she is picking up mugs and looking around like
someone had left that she had been waiting on and talking to.
Then she goes outside, sees a snowman and asks the person walking by if
they made it, almost as if she knew the person. It’s the Doctor, notice
the tie (thin and not neatly tied). In the coach his tie is neatly tied
and much wider. The different looks of the Doctor, (the tie) is similar
to Tennant taking off his tie for Martha. There was also the sleeve
thing with Amy and the Angels, later showed up in the Big Bang.
Later, while still at the snowman, he asks her name and tells her to
keep it and says goodbye while walking around the corner. She goes after
him, stops him and acts like she had more of a conversation then had
happened at the snowman (could he be the person she was waiting on in
the tavern and as she picked up his mug looked around to see where he
went?).
There are a bunch of posters hanging on something behind Clara in one
ally scene, could that be the TARDIS? The posters have been done with
Harold Saxon.
She walks back up the ally and then turns around and starts chasing the
coach as it goes down the street. As she is running down the street, in
the background, there is a man with a top hat, bent the same way as the
Doctors hat and he seems to have the same coat and mannerisms as the
Doctor. He turns, looks at Clara running up the street and walks toward
the ally. You have to look close to see the person, he is in the
background and kind of shadowed. Its when Clara is running, towards the
later part of the run.
Also, the TARDIS in one scene is nice and clean. Later it is dirty and
rough looking.
Could the Doctor be crossing his timeline a little to get Clara to
follow him or am I just seeing things?
